Should the console server sit on the network edge or behind a firewall? In the datacenter environment, console servers will generally be located on a dedicated Management LAN or vlan. Mid sized to large data centers usually (invariably?) have separate/private management networks just for simplicity and segregation of traffic for updates/monitoring. Opengear console servers have robust firewall security which is more than adequate for such installations. In smaller sites (such as branch office networks, server rooms, datacom rooms and wiring closets) the console servers may live on the main operations network - and again the console server's fully functional firewall etc ensure AAA security. Further the ACM5000-2, IMG4200 and IM4200 console servers have additional Ethernet network ports that, in these situations can be configured to serve as a management gateway.
So console servers can be the provider of the management LANs (rather than just sitting on them :). The ACM5000-2, IMG4200 and IM4200 provide a management LAN gateway with firewall, router and DHCP server. With an ACM500-2 or IM4200 you will need to connect an external LAN switch to Network 2 to attach hosts to the management LAN. Whereas the IMG4200 has an integrated four or twenty four port management LAN switch (i.e. it provides a firewall, router, DHCP server and VLAN switch). In these smaller remote sites the console server also provides out of band access - as an edge device directly connected to the public network. This is why all Opengear solutions maintain and enforce AAA policies that protect your distributed network and IT infrastructure from security threats:
