How do I set up Nagios central monitoring with SDT extensions?
There are three parts to Opengear's Nagios management solution:
- The central Nagios server: Nagios typically runs on a Linux server (PC, blade, virtual machine) at a central location and natively it is a monitoring proram (designed to alert you of host network and service problems before your clients!). Opengear's SDT for Nagios extends this so Nagios can automatically import configurations from distributed Opengear servers, and provides secure remote access to the remote locations and activates control programs for solving the problems.
- Distributed Opengear console servers: The CM/IM/IMG console server running firmware 2.4.1 and each runs Nagios plugins, NRPE and NSCA add-ons (but not a full Nagios server)
- SDT for Nagios Client: Typically this is the administrators PC, laptop, etc. running Windows, Linux or Mac OS with SDT Connector client software. It is possibly remote to the central Nagios server or distributed Opengear servers and may receive alert emails from the central Nagios server or distributed Opengear servers. The Client connects to the central Nagios server web UI to view status of monitored hosts and serial devices and uses SDTConnector to connect through the distributed Opengear servers, to manage monitored hosts and serial devices

Setting up up Nagios central monitoring with SDT extensions involves the following four steps:
- Install Nagios and the NSCA and NRPE add-ons on the central Nagios server (Refer faq288)
- Configure each Opengear distributed server for Nagios monitoring, alerting, and SDT Nagios integration (Refer Section10.2.2 Set up distributed console servers> in the User Manual)
- Run the SDT Nagios Configuration Wizard on the central Nagios server (Refer faq288) and perform any additional configuration tasks
- Install SDT Connector on each client (Refer faq289)
