Which global cellular carriers are supported?
Opengear's ACM5000 family supports internally integrated and externally attached 3G cellular modems:
- An external USB cellular modem can be attached to any ACM5000 model (refer faq 396-External-USB-Cellular-Modems). The external USB modem models that are supported do enable connection to any the major CDMA and GSM networks globally
- ACM5004-G comes with an integrated quad band 3G GSM modem which will work with most major 3G GSM carriers globally, including AT&T in USA (refer faq354)
- ACM5004-GV has a 3G CDMA modem for connection to Verizon networks in USA(refer faq354)
Opengear also provides 3G cellular modem support in the IM4200-DAC-X ("IM_X") family of console servers :
- An external USB cellular modem can be attached to any IM_X model (refer faq 396-External-USB-Cellular-Modems). The external USB modem models supported enable connection to any the major CDMA and GSM networks globally
- The IM4200-X-G model has a internally integrated quad band 3G GSM modem (+ external antenna) which will work with major 3G GSM carriers globally - outside USA (refer faq 393-Cellular-IM4200)
- The IM4200-X-G-USA model comes with an externally mounted quad band 3G GSM modem (+ external antenna) which will work with AT&T and other major GSM carriers in USA (refer faq 393-Cellular-IM4200)
- The IM42xx-x-GV-USA model has an externally mounted CDMA modem (+ external antenna) which will work with Verizon and Sprint in USA (refer faq 393-Cellular-IM4200)

Does my console server include the cellular modem and antenna?
All console server models with a -G suffix (such as ACM5004–GV and IM4216-2-G-USA) are supplied with the cellular modem and antenna.
- The ACM5004–G(V) models have an internal GSM (or CDMA) modem with one SMA antenna connector. These models ship with a 5-band, universal, swivel antenna. Alternate high gain antennas can be ordered as accessories (refer faq 385-3G-Antenna)
- The ACM5004–G-I has an internal GSM modem with dual SMA antenna connectors. The second antenna can be used for either receive diversity [AUX] or GPS. This model is supplied with one antenna. Additional high gain antennas or a GPS antenna can be ordered as accessories.
- The IM4200-X-G has an internal GSM modem with dual SMA antenna connectors (which can be used for either receive diversity or GPS). This model is supplied with an external antenna - with 10 foot low loss coaxial interconnecting cable and magnetic base (refer faq 393-Cellular-IM4200). Additional high gain or GPS antennas are available as accessories (refer faq 385-3G-Antenna)
- The IM4200-X-G(V)-USA is supplied with an external USB connected GSM (or CDMA) modem and an external high gain antenna - with 10 foot low loss coaxial interconnecting cable and magnetic base (refer faq 393-Cellular-IM4200)
Alternately you can order any ACM5000 models or IM4200-DAC-X model without a -G suffix, and these console servers will have USB2.0 ports that enable you to attach a cellular modem you source yourself. However only select modem models are supported (refer faq 396-External-USB-Cellular-Modems)
Can I source my carrier data plans (and SIM) from Opengear?
No.
To connect the console server's cellular modem to a cellular service you will need to organize a data plan with your preferred carrier. Also GSM service providers will supply you with a SIM card. For details on the data plan options and provisioning/activating your service:
Do I need a public IP address for cellular connection?
For direct OoB access over the cellular network to your console server you will need a plan that provides publicly accessible fixed or dynamic IP address. Almost all carriers offer corporate mobile data services/plans with a Public (static or dynamic) IP address - though these plans often have a premium service fee attached.
Without this Public (static or dynamic) IP address your console server can still "connect out" easily however it’s is invisible on the Internet to any user or application trying to contact it directly via its carrier assigned private IP address.
Opengear does provide a CMS6100 or VCMS central management solution that will for access your remote console server if your carrier has not provided you with publically accessible IP addresses. You can also use a VPN solution.
