All of Opengear's console server, device server and smart router management appliances are built on a proven open source Linux platform. Linux is subjected to the rigors of truly open testing by the myriad of Linux developers and users around the world. This worldwide community can detect and respond to bugs, interoperability defects and security vulnerabilities more quickly and efficiently than would be possible in a closed proprietary environment. So Opengear offers the most robust solution.
Unlike our competitors we also give our users access to the Linux core - so they can manage their sites openly. And we provide support custom applications and scripting so the customer can craft a unique solutions customized to meet their exact needs. So Opengear offers the most extensible solution.
We have also embedded within our management appliance a rich tapestry of open source management applications and communications and security utilities. So Opengear offers the most complete management solution.

The Power of Open Source
With an Opengear management appliance the customer enjoys all the classic open source benefits (interoperability, reliability, affordability plus freedom from vendor lock-in) - plus they have the opportunity to custom craft the installation at each site:
- All management appliances run the GNU bash shell enabling you to write custom scripts which can be run manually or automatically on boot, or on particular alert events. Refer faq 255
- The rule book feature in the advanced management appliance enables devices to be programmed to automatically respond to nominated events and take scheduled actions (and these events and actions can themselves be custom scripted)
- A free CDK is provided with all management appliances which allows changes to be made to the firmware image. Refer Custom Development Kit (CDK)
- The management appliances are all built upon the uClinux and okvm management software, and the SDT Connector remote access client builds from the sdtcon. Source code is available for all this software. Refer Support: Downloads
