Power control - IPMI and more
Both Users and Administrators can use their console servers to remotely power on, power off, power cycle and read the current status of power strips, UPS supplies and servers:
- Serial port controlled power strips can be accessed and controlled by using their command line console (refer faq 242)
- Serial port controlled power strips can be also accessed and controlled using the Management Console’s power control tools (refer faq 231)
- Network attached power devices with browser controls can be securely accessed with SDT, then controlled directly with HTTP/HTTPS commands. Similarly servers with embedded service processors (like Dell’s DRAC) can be power controlled using the browser based management tools that are supplied with the service processor (like Dell’s Open Manage)
- Servers and other network-attached appliances with embedded IPMI service processors or BMCs can also be accessed and controlled using the Management Console power controls (post V2.2.0) as described below
The IPMI proxy in the console server allows Users and Administrators to remotely cycle power and reboot even when the operating system is unresponsive. To set up networked server for IPMI power control, the Administrator must configure the embedded IPMI device to communicate:
- Select Serial & Network: Network Hosts and add the BMC or Service Processor (e.g. Dell DRAC) as a managed Network Host
- Then in Power Settings, specify the IPMI Power Device Type (1.5 or 2.0) and Username Password
- Also select the level of logging to be undertaken for access to this device access and click Apply
The new Power Manager screen (in Firmware Versions 2.2.0 on) enables both Users and Administrators to access and control configured serial port controlled power strips, and network attached servers and appliances with embedded IPMI service processors or BMCs:
- Select the Manage: Power and the particular Target power device to be controlled
- Then initiate the desired Action to be taken by selecting the appropriate Power ON, Power OFF, Power Cycle or Power Status icon. You will only be presented with icons for those operations that are supported by the Target you have selected
