Dial-in modem out-of-band access All console server models support an external or internal modem connection. If there’s difficulty in accessing the console server through the main network path, the console server provides an out-of-band (OoB) access path. So the Administrator can still access it and its Managed Devices from a remote location using a modem. Some console server models, with USB ports, support attaching an external USB modem. Some models also come standard with an internal modem. All models support serially attaching an external dial-up modem and configuring dial-in OoB access. When configured this will show as the Serial Port tab on the System -> Dial menu.
To activate the Administrator must enable OoB dial-in access on the console server. Once set-up for dial-in PPP access, the console server will await an incoming dial-in connection from a remote site:
Then set up the remote client dial-up software so it can establish a network connection from the Administrator's client modem to the dial-in modem on the console server. If you are using the SDTConnector client it can be set up to OoB connect to the remote console server at the click of a button (refer faq276). |
