What functions are provided by the CMS6100 and VCMS?

Opengear's "CMS" appliances (i.e. the VCMS virtual appliance or the CMS6100 physical appliance) provide central management of your network of sites:

The CMS has an embedded Nagios core that monitors all the local and remote Managed Console Servers and their Managed Devices. Refer faq376 - Nagios monitoring functions provided by CMS
The CMS provides a single pane of glass view from which you can connect to any of your distributed Managed Console Servers or their Managed Devices. With a simple "point-n-click" you can action a selection of connection paths:
- download a pre-configured SDT Connector applet to run on your client PC
- run a proxy browser on the CMS
- initiate scheduled commands from the CMS

The Call-Home feature enables console servers without public accessible IP addresses to establish SSH tunnels to the CMS - so they can be monitored by, and accessed through, the CMS (even when behind firewalls or on private or cellar networks). Refer faq372 - Call Home
The management solution can be set up in minutes as CMS auto detects and auto uploads the profiles from each Managed Console Servers
The CMS maintains authenticated SSH tunnels to each of the Managed Console Servers ensuring secure communications

What is the difference between the CMS6100 and VCMS solution?

Opengear's CMS6100 is an integrated hardware solution. The central management software runs on the AMD Geode based CMS6100 appliance. The CMS6100 configuration is performed by browsing to the IP address of the appliance - a brief overview can be seen in the CMS6100 Quick Start. The CMS can manage up to 255 distributed Managed Console Servers.

Opengear's VCMS is a software virtual appliance. VCMS can be run as a guest under Linux Kernel-based Virtual Machine (Linux KVM) or under a VMware ESX, VMware ESXi or VMware Server. The host may be a physical machine that you administer, or a managed server or a cloud hosting service from a hosting provider. The VCMS can manage thousands of distributed Managed Console Servers - limited only by the host CPU core, RAM and disk space.

Once VCMS has been deployed and the virtual appliance has booted, VCMS configuration is identical to the CMS6100. And once configured both these CMS solutions provide exactly the same features (which is to be expected as the CMS6100 and VCMS run exactly the same code :)

CMS6100 and VCMS software updates

When you purchase your CMS6100 appliance or VCMS virtual appliance activation key you are provided with a commercial license to use the embedded CMS software in perpetuity (subject to the terms of the End User License Agreement (EULA) or VCMS EULA). You also are entitled to 12 months free software upgrades and technical support. For ongoing support and upgrades you will need to purchase extended support.
