Support FAQ 371 | Downloading and deploying VMCS virtual appliance

You may download and deploy a fully featured VCMS appliance at any time. This can be used freely for evaluation purposes (or for non-commercial purposes). You must order and install a VCMS License Key online for ongoing commercial use. The steps are:

Download your VCMS virtual appliance image

Opengear's VCMS virtual central management appliance can be run as a guest under:

a Linux Kernel-based Virtual Machine or
a VMware ESX or VMware ESXi or
a VMware Server

The VCMS is released as a firmware upgrade file (*.bin) and a full image (*.gz). The full image is used for the initial deployment. Firmware upgrade files are used thereafter for upgrades.

You can download images and upgrades from http://www.opengear.com/firmware/. These are fully featured images which can be used freely for evaluation and for non-commercial purposes. License keys for ongoing commercial use are provided by your Opengear sales channel.

Which full disk image you deploy depends on your virtualization solution:

For Linux KVM, use: vcms-x.y.z-kvm.hdd.gz
For VMware ESX/ESXi, use: vcms-x.y.z-vmware-ovf.tar.gz
For VMware server, use: vcms-x.y.z-vmware.tar.gz

Similarly which upgrade file you use also depends on your virtualization solution:

For Linux KVM, use: vcms-x.y.z-kvm.bin
For VMware, use: vcms-x.y.z-vmware.bin

You will need to uncompress the full image using gunzip, Winzip or similar before deployment. (Note: PowerArchiver 2001 does not successfully extract all files). Then deploy the ovf, vmx or hdd file as described below.

VCMS deployment (and upgrades)

So the host on which you deploy VCMS may be a physical machine that you administer, a managed server or a cloud hosting service from a hosting provider. Irrespective, VCMS requires resources of at least a 500MHz CPU core, 256MB RAM and 4GB disk space - which is well below the minimum you will generally provided by a hosted service. In addition VCMS requires a virtual disk device (SATA for VMware or IDE for Linux KVM) and a E1000 compatible Ethernet NIC, bridged

Once VCMS has been deployed and the virtual appliance has booted, VCMS configuration is performed by browsing to the IP address of the virtual NIC. The virtual NIC obtains an address using DHCP and has a static IP address of 192.168.0.1.

License Key

On receipt of your order you will be emailed a VCMS License Key. To install the Key:

Browse to System -> Administration on your deplyed VCMS appliance
Copy the Key from the email that you received into the Licence Key field and click Apply

This Key provides you with a commercial license to use the VCMS software appliance, and entitles you to 12 months free technical support and upgrades. You will need to renew your Key annually to receive ongoing support and upgrades. If you have to contact support, they will ask you to quote the Licence Key number from this page.
