Can I connect an external USB cellular modem into my console server?

All the ACM5000 models and all the models of the new IM4200-X family of console servers have USB2.0 ports. With firmware revision 3.3.2 and later these families support attaching an external USB cellular modem. Currently supported modems include Sierra Wireless models:

Compass 888

USB 598 (Verizon)

USB 598U (Sprint)

USB 312U

USB 308

These devices can be ordered on-line from a Sierra Wireless store or your local carrier

Installing and configuring the USB modem

The USB modem can be plugged directly into USB 2.0 ports on the console server or it can be attached using the USB cable included with the Sierra Wireless modem kit. This should be done with the ACM5000 or IM4200-X device powered off.

If an external antenna is used it can be attached to the TS9 connector on the modem.

It is advisable that the USB modem is Velcro-fastened to the IM4200-X case at the rear or to a vertical upright in the rack. Make sure the Velcro is large enough and is well adhered to both surfaces. The same is recommended for the external blade antenna. Together this allows the antenna up to 36“ (90 cm) of reach for better access and reception.

Once the ACM5000 or IM4200-X console server is powered up, the USB cellular modem should be automatically recognized and can be configured in the UI.

Improving reception with an external antenna

The Sierra Wireless modems have an internal antenna. However this may not perform adequately (particularly if the console server is in a rack or enclosure). So it may be necessary use an external antenna to improve reception quality.

There are a number of options:

A 6-Band Blade Antenna with TS9 Connector is available from Sierra Wireless. This will improve performance in areas with low signal strength. Frequencies: GSM/UMTS/HSPA 850/900/1800/1900/2100 MHz, CDMA 800/1900 MHz and GPS 1575 MHz. Purchase online - SKU Number 6000374

Opengear offers a higher gain antenna (SKU# 569006) and 10 foot low loss coaxial interconnecting cable - with SMA and TS-9 adapter and magnetic base (SKU# 449045). This antenna cable has a TS9 connector which plugs into the modem. As the SKU# 449045 has a magnetic base, it makes antenna placement much easier and rigid.

You may also source your own external high gain antenna and cables. However these generally will use larger SMA connectors (rather than TS9 which is the tiny connector on the Sierra Wireless USB modem). So an adapter may be needed. Adapters can sourced online (e.g. at www.wifi-link.com), or from Opengear's e-store (SKU #310175).
